Minneapolis rock band The Melismatics are set to release their latest album, “MANIA!” on January 10th through Chicago’s Pravda Records. They’ll start a national tour on January 12th at the Zoo Bar in Lincoln before heading to the West coast. “MANIA!” was produced by Jon Auer of The Posies and Big Star, along with Ed Ackerson (Motion City Soundtrack, Golden Smog, The Replacements) and was mixed by John Fields. The LP features collaborations with Dan Wilson (Adele, Semisonic) and Jon Auer who lends vocals to several tracks. Killswitch Engage and Singer Howard Jones Part Ways

The members of Killswitch Engage released a formal statement today officially ending their on-again, off-again relationship with vocalist Howard Jones. “To our family, friends and fans: We have decided to continue on without Howard Jones as the singer of Killswitch Engage. We love Howard and are thankful for the nine years that we’ve had him in the band. Out of respect for everyone involved we will not be discussing the specific reasons behind this decision. Howard is a part of our family and always will be, and we wish him well. He has left big shoes to fill, so we certainly have our work cut out for us to find the next singer of Killswitch, something we plan on making priority #1 going forward. Most [...]

I Hate to Love Him

If it wasn’t for “The Voice” I would have never discovered this man. Or been able to stomach some of the videos he made with his band – it’s obvious Adam Levine has a serious history of using videos as a thinly veiled excuse to roll around naked with models and for macho-man displays that make me cringe. (Except that one where his current girlfriend beats the crap out of him – that shit is FUNNY.) I mean seriously, dude – you have such a girly voice – which is awesome, don’t get me wrong, but passing yourself off in videos as some badass just doesn’t work. It’s not your thang baby…it’s obvious you’re a lover not a fighter. Sort of…a white Prince. Except you [...]

New Year Resolutions and Stuff

Hey everyone…I am re-branding my former Mayhem Media site to here and this is still under construction. When I started Mayhem Media, it was to focus on punk, rockabilly/psychobilly, metal music and horror stuff. The name worked for that. But I have evolved a little (okay more than a little) and find myself focusing more on country and Americana music as well, seeing as how I grew up with all those old country classics. I felt that A) the name didn’t work with such a varied genre coverage and B) the horror just didn’t work any more period and needs a different blog if I pursue that. A fellow Yahoo!Voices contributor suggested this name, or its specific spelling, so I could grab the holy grail [...]

Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum to Release Dead Fingers Self-Titled Debut Album on February 28th

Kate Taylor and Taylor Hollingsworth have joined hand in hand and formed a band. Ladies and gentlemen, Dead Fingers might just be what you’ve been waiting for! In a time when guy-girl duos are becoming quite popular, this one is not just some gimmick, however perfect the timing and package may be. You would almost think Kate was married to her manager, or a record label executive who has them acting like they were romantic just to sell tickets and albums. But in fact, this Alabama duo are recently married and the two just recorded their first self titled full length with Bruce Watson (RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Iggy and the Stooges, AA Bondy), being released on Big Legal Mess/ Fat Possum Records on February [...]

Two Amazing Videos by Nico Vega

I recently saw the movie “Answers to Nothing” which has Aja Volkmann in it, and was blown away by her performances of “Iron Man” and “Beast.” So of course I had to hit up youtube and found these two gems: one an impromptu performance of “House of the Rising Sun” (or part of it anyway) and an acoustic version of “Beast,” stripped down. Oh where have you been all my life? These are seriously awesome. Tweet This Post

On the Road with Chuck Ragan

I had the pleasure of a sit-down with Chuck Ragan when he passed through San Antonio. I gotta tell you, I cover a lot of bands in some small, divey venues, but this was hands down the smallest – and darkest – venue I’ve ever covered, as he was playing the basement of the club. It was a bit rough, to say the least, but hanging out with Ragan before the show was a chance to really pick the brain of an artist and talk about art and making music and keeping hope alive in a sometimes shitty world. Full interview on Yahoo! Music. Tweet This Post
